The New Schleich Quetzalcoatlus Model (2023)

The new for 2023 Schleich Quetzalcoatlus model has arrived in stock at Everything Dinosaur. This week has been exceptionally busy for Everything Dinosaur team members with new model deliveries from Papo, Mojo Fun and now Schleich.

Still, despite their busy schedule Everything Dinosaur team members manage to keep smiling.

Schleich Quetzalcoatlus Model

The colourful Schleich Quetzalcoatlus model has an innovative design. There are joints at the shoulders and at the hands which permits the wings to be bent. The figure can be posed in a resting position. Alternatively, the wings can be folded out to give the impression that this flying reptile is airborne,

Schleich has a long history of producing Quetzalcoatlus figures. Quetzalcoatlus featured in the original Schleich “Saurus” model series and also in the smaller Schleich dinosaurs range. This is the first Schleich pterosaur to be produced with articulated wings.

The model has a brightly coloured head. Palaeontologists think that pterosaurs had excellent colour vision.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“The head of the Quetzalcoatlus is a striking combination of crimson and purple. The colour scheme chosen by the design team at Schleich is quite inspired.”

The spokesperson added:

“The novel, folded wings provide plenty of options for creative, imaginative play.”

The New for 2023 Mojo Fun Woolly Rhino

The new for 2023 Mojo Fun Woolly Rhino is in stock at Everything Dinosaur. Team members have been busy contacting all the customers who wanted to be informed about this prehistoric rhino’s arrival. The Woolly Rhino has been eagerly anticipated, it is a beautifully detailed replica of a Coelodonta antiquitatis.

The Woolly Rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis)

It is thought that this ancient rhinoceros evolved in Asia. During the Pleistocene Epoch it had an extensive range.

Fossils of Coelodonta antiquitatis have been found in the London area (Thames River gravels). The scientific name translates as “ancient hollow tooth”. The name derives from the animal’s teeth. Molars associated with this grazer of grasses and sedge have a distinctive cavity.

The Mojo Fun Woolly Rhinoceros model measures around 19 cm in length. Everything Dinosaur team members estimate the head height to be around 7 cm.

Woolly Rhino Extinction

The last of the Woolly Rhinos are believed to have persisted in Siberia. The genus becoming extinct around 13,000 to 14,000 years ago. A research paper published in 2021 (Wang et al), postulated that some Woolly Rhinos could have survived into the Holocene, with the last of their kind dying out around 9,800 years ago. The conclusions of the study, which was based on the dating of environmental DNA, have been challenged. The environmental DNA could have originated from older sediments and subsequently redeposited into much younger strata.

Hello Old Friends Papo Models

The recently reintroduced Papo Archaeopteryx and Woolly Rhino models have arrived in stock at Everything Dinosaur. The two retired figures are available again. Team members have been busy contacting those customers about the reintroduction of these two prehistoric animal models.

The picture (above) shows the first of these two figures to be unpacked this morning. A shipment of Papo models arrived including the Papo Archaeopteryx and the Woolly Rhino.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur stated:

“It is great to see these old friends again. We know that many collectors missed out on these two models when they were originally launched. These model fans have the opportunity to complete their Papo collections.”

The Papo Woolly Rhinoceros Model

The Papo Woolly Rhinoceros model was introduced in 2013. It was retired a few years later. The figure has proved popular with collectors. Numerous Woolly Rhino fossils have been found in France and Papo were keen to introduce models of animals reflected in the country’s own extensive fossil record. The Woolly Rhinoceros had a large, keeled front horn. This horn and the model’s shape reflected fossil evidence and the prehistoric drawings found in French caves.

Papo Archaeopteryx

The Papo “Urvogel” or Archaeopteryx was first introduced into the “Les Dinosaures” range back in 2014. This colourful theropod model was withdrawn in 2019. One of the ways in which manufacturers can engage with their customers is by reintroducing old favourites that had gone out of production. It also provides the manufacturer with a low-cost model. No mould making costs or development costs are associated with a reintroduced figure.

The Papo Archaeopteryx and Woolly Rhino Figures

Dinosaur fans and model collectors have already begun to speculate on what other recently retired Papo figures might be returned.

The spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur did confirm that discussions had taken place some years ago about the return of the iconic Papo standing T. rex model (green standing T. rex).

Our Favourite Dinosaur is the Popular Protoceratops

What is Everything Dinosaur’s favourite dinosaur? This question was asked recently and although we are fascinated with lots of prehistoric animals, a quick discussion revealed that our favourite dinosaur is Protoceratops.

Palaeontologists can study Protoceratops (there are now two recognised species) at various growth stages from embryos in eggs to extremely old, mature adults.

The “Sheep of the Cretaceous”

Nicknamed the “sheep of the Cretaceous” due to the relatively abundant fossil material. This dinosaur, distantly related to Triceratops and Styracosaurus was formally described 100 years ago (Granger and Gregory,1923). Two species are recognised Protoceratops andrewsi and P. hellenikorhinus (Lambert et al 2001).

The picture (above) shows the Wild Past Protoceratops dinosaur model. It is a small figure, but it does come supplied with a nest and an Everything Dinosaur fact sheet.

Our Favourite Dinosaur is Protoceratops

We have learned a lot about dinosaurs thanks to Protoceratops. It may not be the biggest dinosaur, but this herbivore has played a significant role in helping us to understand more about the Dinosauria and as such we will always regard this animal as something special.

If you visit a Natural History Museum, chances are that somewhere in the dinosaur gallery you will find Protoceratops. It is usually tucked away and it’s never going to attract the visitors like a T. rex, or a Triceratops (distantly related to Protoceratops), but go take a look, as I promise, you will probably learn something new about dinosaurs that you didn’t know before.

Baby Frog Spotted Near Office Pond

A baby frog spotted by an Everything Dinosaur team member close to the company’s office pond. This is the first frog observed from this year’s breeding season. The tiny frog (Rana temporaria) was observed in a small patch of gravel. This area has been left and weeds allowed to grow, thus providing shelter and habitat for animal’s leaving the pond.

Baby Frog Spotted (Rana temporaria)

The frog is a Common Frog (Rana temporaria). In common with all British amphibians this frog is protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981. Garden ponds are an increasingly important habitat for them. In return, they help keep slug and snail numbers down. In short, amphibians like the Common Frog are the gardener’s friend.

The first batch of frogspawn was laid in the office pond on February 28th. This is the earliest recorded date for frogs spawning in our pond. We suspect that the spotting of a baby frog on the evening of 24th June is the earliest recorded date for observing a frog from that year’s breeding season.

Doing Our Bit for Conservation

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented that team members had been busy looking after the office pond and removing excessive algae on a regular basis. The water level is quite low, but the pond is being carefully monitored to ensure it remains an attractive habitat for fauna and flora.

Recently, some oxygenating hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) was introduced to the pond. This plant will grow rapidly and help to combat the excessive growth of any algae. It is hardy, tough and fast growing. Hopefully, the introduction of this oxygenator will help to keep the pond in good condition and encourage lots of wildlife.

The spokesperson added:

“We like doing our bit for conservation. Many ponds around us have been filled in and we are pleased that our little pond is helping to maintain the local frog population. We shall keep observing the pond area, we might spot more baby frogs.”

Wild Safari Prehistoric World Majungasaurus

The new for 2023 Wild Safari Prehistoric World Majungasaurus dinosaur model is in stock at Everything Dinosaur. This colourful abelisaurid joins the other recently introduced theropod dinosaur Cryolophosaurus. A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur welcomed the Majungasaurus into stock and stated:

“Majungasaurus puts Madagascar on the map when it comes to Late Cretaceous theropods”.

Wild Safari Prehistoric World Majungasaurus

This striking theropod measures over 25 cm (10 inches) in length. The majestic head is approximately 11.4 cm (4.5 inches) off the ground. The dinosaur model will be supplied with an Everything Dinosaur Majungasaurus fact sheet.

A Prehistoric World Majungasaurus

The Everything Dinosaur spokesperson praised Safari Ltd for adding a Majungasaurus to their model range and commented that the American company certainly had a great sense of humour, as one of the images of the model depicted this dinosaur devouring a biscuit.

The colour scheme chosen depicts counter shading and the red stripes give this dinosaur a fearsome appearance. Majungasaurus was the apex predator in its environment. The model has the tiny arms of a Late Cretaceous abelisaurid. It also has a dimpled skin texture. Everything Dinosaur team members are not sure as to whether skin impressions of Majungasaurus are known.

Spectacular Patagotitan Skeleton on Display

Everything Dinosaur team members recently visited the Natural History Museum in London to see the enormous Patagotitan skeleton on display. This is the first time this titanosaur exhibition has visited Europe. The huge replica skeleton of Patagotitan (P. mayorum) is twelve metres longer than the skeleton of the blue whale (Hope) on display above the Hintze Hall. The exhibition is entitled “Titanosaur: Life as the Biggest Dinosaur”. Patagotitan mayorum may not be the biggest dinosaur described to date, but it does have one of the most complete fossil records of any member of the Titanosauria.

Patagotitan mayorum

Named and described in 2017. Patagotitan fossils were excavated from the Cerro Barcino Formation in Chubut Province, Patagonia in southern Argentina. Size estimates vary for this enormous animal. When first studied, the length of the largest specimen known from the fossil quarry was estimated to be around 37 metres.

Last year (2022) Safari Ltd introduced a beautiful replica of this titanosaur.

“Enormosaurus”

The first fossils were found (2010) and field excavations were undertaken (2012 to 2015). As the fossil material was excavate, the bones were so big the dinosaur was nicknamed “Enormosaurus”.

New Wild Safari Cryolophosaurus Coming into Stock

The Wild Safari Prehistoric World Cryolophosaurus dinosaur model is coming into stock at Everything Dinosaur. A spokesperson from the UK-based company confirmed that the Cryolophosaurus figure was due to arrive next week.

Cryolophosaurus Dinosaur Model

Cryolophosaurus “frozen crested lizard”, was named and scientifically described in 1994. At around six metres in length, this theropod is thought to have been the apex predator in the Early Jurassic ecosystem associated with Antarctica. The new for 2023 Safari Ltd Cryolophosaurus sports a crimson crest. This thin crest earned this dinosaur the nickname “Elvisaurus”. The crest probably played a role in visual communication or confirming fitness for breeding.

Cryolophosaurus Model Measurements

The Wild Safari Prehistoric World Cryolophosaurus dinosaur model measures twenty centimetres in length. That beautifully sculpted head stands around eight centimetres off the ground. Sales of this dinosaur model will be sent out with a free Cryolophosaurus fact sheet. The fact sheet has been researched and written by Everything Dinosaur team members.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented that Safari Ltd, was not releasing details about new models in a single press release. Introductions had been scheduled to take place throughout the year. As a result, Everything Dinosaur team members had been eagerly awaiting the arrival of this colourful theropod figure.

The spokesperson added:

“It is a fantastic model. It’s great to have another dinosaur model representing the fauna of the southern part of Gondwana.”

Exclusive News – Rebor “Tyrannosaurus rex Vanilla Ice” Mountain Retired

The Rebor “Tyrannosaurus rex Vanilla Ice” Mountain replica has been withdrawn from production. A source close to Everything Dinosaur has confirmed that this Tyrannosaurus rex figure has been retired. The model represented a version of a tyrannosaur popularised by the 2005 King Kong film.

Rebor 1:35 scale ““Tyrannosaurus rex Vanilla Ice”

Originally introduced in the autumn of 2018, the Rebor “Tyrannosaurus rex Vanilla Ice” in the mountain colour scheme proved extremely popular with dinosaur fans and model collectors. It had a counterpart, the “jungle” version. This too, also proved popular amongst fans of prehistoric animal figures.

The picture (above), shows the Rebor 1/35th scale model “Tyrannosaurus rex” Vanilla Ice Mountain displayed on the Rebor “Summer Kisses” display base.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“Models do get retired occasionally. When a model is retired it allows the factory time to produce new figures and replicas. As products get retired, it permits new models to be developed and enter the product range.”

Rebor has produced a wide variety of Tyrannosaurus rex models. The company has been creating models that reflect how T. rex is portrayed in films. Other replicas named “Retrosaurs” reflect earlier film depictions of theropod dinosaurs.

Recently, Rebor introduced the Rebor Tyrannosaurus rex “KISS” Mountain version, a tyrannosaur with lips. This figure also had a counterpart “TUSK” that depicted T. rex as a dinosaur without lips.

Everything Dinosaur Features in Special Blog Post

Everything Dinosaur team members have been featured in a blog article posted by a fossil collector and organiser of guided fossil walks at Lyme Regis. Brandon Lennon wrote about the ammonite figures that we supplied him. These models make excellent teaching resources when explaining about the creatures that the Lyme Regis ammonite fossils represent.

Ammonite Models

Ammonite models supplied by Everything Dinosaur can be spotted in museums. Palaeontologists use them in their science outreach work. Fossil collectors like to display the models next to ammonite fossils.

The Bullyland, large ammonite model is a popular choice amongst palaeontologists and fossil collectors.

Brandon Lennon leads guided fossil walks in the Lyme Regis and Charmouth areas. These walks are extremely well attended, and Brandon uses the ammonite figures to help explain a little about these enigmatic cephalopods.
