Preparing a Script for the Wild Past Protoceratops

Scripting a Video Review of the Wild Past Protoceratops Model

Everything Dinosaur team members have been working on a video review of the recently introduced Wild Past Protoceratops dinosaur model.  The model, representing Protoceratops andrewsi is the first prehistoric animal in this exciting new range.  Our video review, due to be published shortly on Everything Dinosaur’s YouTube channel, will look at the model, the nest of young Protoceratops and comment on the excellent packaging.  We also intend to provide a little bit of scientific information about Protoceratops and the two species that currently comprise this genus (P. andrewsi and P. hellenikorhinus).

Synonymous with Dinosaur Eggs

Protoceratops is synonymous with the discovery of dinosaur eggs.  Eggshell fragments were found in the area of the Flaming Cliffs by the American Museum of Natural History expedition in 1922 and they returned to the same area in the following year and discovered several nests full of fossilised eggs.  As Protoceratops was the most abundant dinosaur known from the Djadokhta Formation it was assumed that the nests had been created by “first horned face”.

The discovery of a fragmentary bird-like fossil found within ten centimetres from the eggs, immediately put this strange theropod under suspicion of having been overtaken by a sandstorm whilst in the process of raiding the Protoceratops nest.  This new dinosaur was subsequently named Oviraptor philoceratops which translates as “Egg thief with a liking for Protoceratops”.

Protoceratops defends its nest from Oviraptor.
Protoceratops confronts Oviraptor- the egg thief.  A “classic” dinosaur illustration by Rudolph F. Zallinger.  A re-interpretation of the fossil evidence indicates that “egg thief” was actually brooding the eggs on the nest.

Slandering Oviraptor

We now know that the name Oviraptor slanders this dinosaur, it was not stealing the eggs but brooding them, a more appropriate name might be “conscientious lizard”, the first oviraptorid dinosaur ever to be scientifically described, died whilst protecting its own young.  However, the rules surrounding zoological names are clear, you cannot change a name, no matter how inappropriate it subsequently turns out to be.

Wild Past Protoceratops Model Complete with Nest

In 2011,  a scientific paper was published that finally described a nest associated Protoceratops andrewsi that had been recovered from the Djadokhta Formation.  Just like the Wild Past model, the nest contained recently hatched babies.  Analysis of their tiny fossil bones demonstrated that the baby Protoceratops were incapable of moving far on their own and that Protoceratops probably was an altricial species, that is, the young relied on their parents to feed them and to look after them.

There is much to be admired in the details shown in the Wild Past Protoceratops nest and it is great to see that this replica comes with a nest of youngsters reflecting the fossil record.

Model collector Ed reviewed the CollectA Torosaurus model that he had recently purchased from us:

“Nice to have a model of a not very well known dinosaur.  Torosaurus was in walking with dinosaurs and they made a figure as well.  A smallish model but it really shows its large head in comparison to the rest of its body.  Nice colouring to.  Good service from Everything Dinosaur.”

Fantastic Papo Tyrannosaurids Dinosaur Models

Papo Tyrannosaurids – A Pair of Papo Tyrannosaurs

At Everything Dinosaur, we like to do our best when it comes to assisting our customers.  Take for example, a fan of Papo prehistoric animal models who asked us to photograph a Papo brown Tyrannosaurus rex model and the Papo Gorgosaurus replica prior to making a potential purchase.  Our team members were happy to oblige and emailed over several photographs from the company’s own studio of the two tyrannosaurids including a picture of the two prehistoric animals together on one of the turntables we use for our YouTube videos.

Papo Tyrannosaurs

These two tyrannosaurs make an attractive pair.  The Papo brown T. rex model was introduced in 2012 replacing the “classic” green version of this dinosaur.  The Papo Gorgosaurus is a much more recent addition to the Papo “Les Dinosaures” range.  This figure was introduced in 2019.

With the current COVID-19 difficulties, Everything Dinosaur has been able to put in place a series of contingency measures to help the company to continue operating its mail order business.  For example, making commitments to stock figures earlier than normal and putting in place plans to hold various products in readiness to bring them into the company’s warehouse.  These measures and the other steps that Everything Dinosaur have taken have enabled the company to maintain the availability of a number of product lines, including the popular Papo prehistoric animals.

Missing Fossil Collecting Making Plans for the Future

By |2024-02-19T08:59:52+00:00May 7th, 2020|Categories: Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Main Page, Photos/Pictures of Fossils|2 Comments

Missing Fossil Collecting

Everything Dinosaur team members had lots of plans for fossil collecting expeditions over the late spring and summer months.  Like lots of people at the moment we have had to postpone these activities (COVID-19).  Instead, team members are busy planning some projects and fieldwork for the late autumn and for 2021.

Missing Fossil Collecting

A Lot of Plans for Fieldwork are Having to be Redrawn

A point often overlooked when discussing fossil collecting as a hobby, is that if fossils were not found and collected, many important specimens would be lost to the elements.  Fossils eroding out of the cliffs along the Dorset coast for example, they could easily be lost to the sea as there are very few visitors permitted to the “Jurassic Coast” at the moment.

With Many Countries in Lockdown Fossil Finding Expeditions for Many People are not Possible at the Moment

Museums Closed Too

Important research work has also had to be postponed or suspended.  Researchers wanting to access museum specimens will probably have to wait until these institutions and other academic bodies such as universities can function properly with a full complement of staff.

Access to Museum Collections is Restricted for the Time Being

Keeping Ourselves Occupied

Everything Dinosaur team members have lots to keep them occupied.  Ironically, a few weeks before the lockdown came into effect, we were at the London Natural History Museum undertaking some project work ourselves.  We visited various parts of the museum including the marine reptiles gallery, although if you know that part of the museum quite well, it is not only the marine reptile specimens that are on display, we were there for the ichthyosaurs, the Metriorhynchidae (marine crocodyliforms) as well as one other very important fossil specimen that is located there but we won’t mention this…

Preparing for the New Caviramus

By |2024-02-19T07:27:32+00:00May 3rd, 2020|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products|0 Comments

Preparations Underway for the CollectA Caviramus Pterosaur Model

At the end of November last year (2019), Everything Dinosaur revealed that CollectA would be introducing a replica of the bizarre Late Triassic pterosaur Caviramus.  This 1:2 scale model, along with the rest of the remaining new for 2020 CollectA prehistoric animals, have been delayed (coronavirus outbreak), but team members at Everything Dinosaur have still been busy making preparations for this model’s arrival.

Arriving in 2020 (Later on in the Year) The CollectA Supreme Caviramus Pterosaur Model

CollectA Caviramus model with an articulated jaw.
The bizarre Late Triassic pterosaur Caviramus (CollectA Caviramus model).

Caviramus schesaplanensis

Of all the pterosaurs known to science (there are around 130 genera), arguably the most bizarre but poorly known are those from the Late Triassic and into the latter stages of the Early Jurassic (Toarcian stage), that have been tentatively grouped together as “Campylognathoidids”.  Caviramus is one such member, assigned by several authors, although there is very little agreement amongst pterosaur experts how the various associated genera are related to each other, or indeed, how they fit into the wider Pterosauria.

The grouping consists of around half a dozen or so assorted genera, most of which have been found in Europe.  European members include Austriadactylus, Carniadactylus, Eudimorphodon, Campylognathoides, Caviramus and Raeticodactylus.

Named and described in 2006 (Fröbisch and Fröbisch), from a partial lower jaw found on the western slope of the Schesaplana mountain in Switzerland, Caviramus schesaplanensis was soon joined by another species (C. filisurensis), following the scientific description in 2008 of a much more complete skeleton found in contemporaneous deposits.

As if to highlight the complexities of trying to phylogenetically plot these strange flying reptiles, Caviramus filisurensis was placed in its own genus Raeticodactylus when it was described (Rico Stetcher).  However, other researchers challenged this placement and comparisons with the jawbone of C. schesaplanensis led to claims that the two pterosaur fossils represented the same species or at least they were congeneric (belonging to the same genus).

Recent Studies

A more recent study (2014), concluded that these two, closely related pterosaurs should be placed in the Raeticodactylidae family and that Raeticodactylus was the sister genus of Caviramus.  This phylogenetic assessment remains controversial, as indeed does the placement of all the “campylognathoidids” within the Pterosauria.  In our fact sheet that will accompany sales of the CollectA Supreme 1:2 scale Caviramus replica, we hope to provide a little more information about this Triassic flying reptile.

From the Upper Triassic Kössen Formation

With their complex, multi-cusped teeth, large eyes, down-turned lower jaw tips and proportionately long wing fingers, the “Campylognathoidids” represent one of the earliest radiations of the Pterosauria.  In common with most other early pterosaurs Caviramus was relatively small, with an estimated wingspan of around 1.2 metres, giving it a wingspan roughly comparable to the Common Buzzard (Buteo buteo).  However, what Caviramus ate is entirely unknown.  Wear and scratches observed on teeth along with studies of jaw morphology suggest that these flying reptiles were capable of processing their food in their mouths to some degree – chewing, an anatomic trait unique within the Pterosauria.

What Caviramus ate is very much open to speculation.  It probably was a generalist feeding on plant material, invertebrates, small vertebrates and possibly carrion.  Studies of the potential aerial abilities of Caviramus indicate that it may have flown but relied on gliding to an extent.

Problems with Dating Caviramus schesaplanensis Fossils

The fossilised partial lower jaw assigned to C. schesaplanensis comes from the Kössen Formation.  Its age is uncertain due to problems over accurately dating the strata.  The sediments represent a lagoonal environment that overtime, became a more open marine ecosystem but the absence of any obvious zonal fossils such as ammonites or conodonts makes accurate dating very difficult.  The strata are regarded as Late Norian to Early Rhaetian in age.  Based on this, our team members conclude that Caviramus was taking to the air around 210-206 million years ago.

New Processes Helps Mail Order Business Continue to Operate

Everything Dinosaur Mail Order Business Still Operating

These are certainly challenging times for us all.  The coronavirus pandemic continues and team members at Everything Dinosaur would like to convey our thoughts and sympathies to all those people who have been affected by the virus.  We would also like to extend our very best wishes to each and every one of our customers, social media followers and friends.  We are all living through a very difficult set of circumstances but Everything Dinosaur continues to provide assistance, advice and support.

Everything Dinosaur Providing Assistance and Support

Our mail order business is still operating, we have been following UK Government advice implementing hygiene measures, social distancing and cleanliness regimes.  Fortunately, we were kept very well informed with regards to the position in China earlier on in the year and in January (2020), we began to put into place new practices and contingency plans that enabled our mail order business to keep operating.

Everything Dinosaur continues to pack and despatch orders.  Our mail order business is still open and we continue to send out parcels to our customers all over the world.  Everything Dinosaur is not extinct!

Uncharted Territory for Businesses

COVID-19 and all its implications represent uncharted territory for all businesses.  Everything Dinosaur has been challenged on numerous fronts but we are doing all we can to continue operating.  We are still able to pack and depatch parcels and we have arranged a collection routine that means that parcels can be collected by various couriers and Royal Mail staff using a rota system.  This has enabled us to provide collections twice daily and on certain days of the week three times a day.

Working closely with our postal partners across the globe we have been able to maintain delivery services.  However, delivery delays are to be expected.  Many countries have implemented special measures to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and these measures have had an impact on delivery times.

Whilst the situation remains fluid, it is reassuring for Everything Dinosaur’s customers to note that we have maintained our five-star rating for customer service (as independently verified by the rating company Feefo).  Indeed, many of our customers have praised our team members for packing and despatching orders so promptly permitting swift deliveries to be made.

Reviewing the Mojo Fun Tyrannosaurus rex Deluxe

The current difficulties we are all experiencing (coronavirus outbreak), are having a significant impact on all our lives.  At Everything Dinosaur, we are doing what we can to continue to work as normally as possible.  Whilst the mail order side of the company is still operating, we are hampered by delays in production both of existing and new for 2020 prehistoric animal models.  Take for example, the Mojo Fun Prehistoric Life model range.

Mojo Fun Prehistoric Life Models

A lot of work had gone into revamping and extending the company’s range of dinosaur figures.  A total of sixteen new models/colour variants of existing models were due to be introduced this spring.  These have all been delayed due to coronavirus.  Everything Dinosaur is doing all it can to bring these new models into stock, we are optimistic that these figures will be available in a few weeks.

Lots of new dinosaur models due out soon from Mojo Fun.

In the meantime, the delay has allowed us to get a little creative when it comes to highlighting this range.  With some production models and prototypes around the office, this gave us the opportunity for some collectors and dinosaur enthusiasts to get their hands on a replica long before anybody else.

The Everything Dinosaur website: Visit Everything Dinosaur.

The new for 2020 Mojo Fun Tyrannosaurus rex with an articulated jaw was despatched to Thomas, a student with an ambition to study palaeontology at university, so that he could provide a review of a figure from an expert’s point of view.

Our thanks to Thomas, for his comments and for the excellent photographs he sent us.

Reviewing the Mojo Fun Tyrannosaurus rex with Articulated Jaw

The 2020 Mojo Fun Tyrannosaurus rex is a great improvement upon their previous Red T. rex.  The new 2020 figure is a large figure at around 30 cm or 1 foot long and over 10 cm tall (10.8 cm tall roughly).  The model’s dynamic walking posture can be interpreted in many different ways allowing for several creative scenarios to be made, such as stalking prey, exploring territory, a general walking motion or even pursuing a fleeing prey item.

Stalking Prey or Exploring a Territory – The New for 2020 Mojo Fun Tyrannosaurus rex Deluxe

Mojo Fun Prehistoric Life T. rex Deluxe (2020)
The dynamic walking posture of the new T. rex figure.

An Attractive Choice of Colouration

The figure is sturdy and stands well but can have difficulty standing on softer ground (grass) and uneven surfaces such as gravel.  The rusty orange to copper colouration chosen for the figure is an interesting and attractive choice which helps to make the model stand out more amongst other figures and perhaps more appealing to younger minds.

The Texture of the T. rex Replica is Highlighted

Ridges Along the Neck, Back and Halfway Down the Tail

The texture of the figure is rough with multiple bumpy ridges along the top of the neck, back and halfway down the tail.  The model is quite firm in hand and has a nice weight to it.  On top of this, the figure is also fairly robust and can endure rough play but the paint job in certain areas of the body can be chipped easily, though, in the case of imaginative play this may give the figure further character as the scrapes can be interpreted as battle scarring.

The Mojo Fun Tyrannosaurus rex has an Articulated Jaw

The Mojo Fun Tyrannosaurus rex Deluxe has an articualted lower jaw.
The new for 2020 Mojo Fun Tyrannosaurus rex Deluxe has an articulated jaw.

Eye-catching Colouration

Its eye-catching colouration gives the impression of a fierce animal, something many people might find appealing about this figure.  The articulated jaw feature allows for further creative and imaginative play though it can be a bit loose at times and has a somewhat limited degree of movement.  The overall sculpt of the figure gives off some “Jurassic Park” vibes adding to the figure’s appeal for creative play.  The hands of the figure are not pronated which is a plus.

Plenty of Detail to Admire in the Mojo Fun Tyrannosaurus rex Deluxe

Concluding Comments

In conclusion, the 2020 Mojo Fun Tyrannosaurus rex figure is great for imaginative and creative play and is quite durable and robust.  Its relatively high sturdiness also means that on hard surfaces it is unlikely to fall over very easily, an issue that a lot of older theropod figures have, this is achieved by an increase in foot size and a well-balanced figure opting for a more dense plastic allowing for the figure to stand firmly.

Ideal for Imaginative and Creative Play

Great for robust, imaginative play the Mojo Fun Tyrannosaurus rex Deluxe.

Stocking Up with Papo Prehistoric Animals

By |2024-02-17T18:19:04+00:00April 15th, 2020|Categories: Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products, Press Releases|0 Comments

Everything Dinosaur Bringing in More Stock of Papo Models

Things may be very difficult for all of us at the moment as the UK and much of the world for that matter, progresses through the fourth week of lockdown.  Everything Dinosaur’s work in schools has had to be postponed and all events and outreach activities cancelled but the company’s mail order operations continue to function.

Fortunately, team members became aware of the potential problems that a widespread outbreak of coronavirus might cause relatively early in the year, many weeks before the disease became a pandemic.  As a result, Everything Dinosaur was able to put in place a number of contingency measures to help the company to continue working.

Papo Prehistoric Animals

For example, making commitments to stock earlier than normal and putting in place plans to hold various products in readiness to bring them into the company’s warehouse.  These measures have helped Everything Dinosaur to maintain the availability of a number of ranges, such as the popular Papo prehistoric animals.  Yesterday, the first of the contingency stock was made available to customers.

Seventeen Different Prehistoric Animals in the Papo Range to Replenish Stock

Seventeen different types of prehistoric animal model from the Papo range were brought into stock.  All the individual prehistoric animals still available in the Papo range are now in stock at Everything Dinosaur.  The only out of stock items are the retired Tupuxuara, some gift boxes and the small tub of Papo dinosaur models.

Everything Dinosaur Comments

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“These are extremely challenging times.  Whilst we have had to suspend our work in schools, postpone events and all the outreach work that we had planned, we are still endeavouring to provide a degree of normality for our many thousands of customers all over the world.  We are still able to offer a mail-order service to those consumers wishing to purchase items.  We do appreciate the comments of many parents and grandparents that we have received who have been delighted that we are still able to provide them with the special dinosaur themed gifts for the birthday of loved ones.  Many collectors are self-isolating and we do understand how indulging a hobby or an interest can provide a welcome distraction and aid mental well-being.”

The spokesperson added:

“We have been happy to set items aside, keep items back until mail networks become more stable, reserve products for customers and provide updated advice on the potential availability for new for 2020 items.  Our team members have been doing all they can to advise and support customers.”

Rebor Replicas – Testing the Knowledge of Collectors

The crossword has been designed as a bit of a challenge for the fans of the Rebor range.  Since the introduction of these models six years ago, the range has increased and now contains a very wide range of dinosaurs – Velociraptors, tyrannosaurids, Stegosaurus, Acrocanthosaurus, armoured dinosaurs and ornithopods.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:

“We have tried to feature as many Rebor figures and replicas as we could in our crossword puzzle.  The crossword has been designed to test knowledge about the Rebor model range and we think that the clues, some of which are cryptic, make this quite a challenge.  It was certainly a lot of fun creating the puzzle and it is available free from Everything Dinosaur.”
