Year 1 Pupils Produce High Quality Writing

A return visit today to Winnington Park Primary School in Cheshire to work with Year 1 and Everything Dinosaur mentioned by Ofsted.  This is the second time that a member of the Everything Dinosaur teaching team has visited this school.  Our last visit was in June 2014 to help reinforce learning and summarise the teaching work undertaken as the children had studied all things dinosaur over the summer term.

Studying Dinosaurs and Fossils

Today’s activities were a provocation, helping to motivate and enthuse, as the children had just started studying dinosaurs and fossils.  However, the pupils displayed a remarkable degree of knowledge and applied learning, even at this early stage of the term topic.  Under the expert tutelage of the teaching team, the children had been creating fact books all about dinosaurs and learning how to tell plant-eaters and meat-eaters apart.  We helped the eager, budding young palaeontologists explore fossils and dinosaurs, leaving them with an extension activity that involved measuring and comparing different sets of dinosaur footprints.

Everything Dinosaur Mentioned in Ofsted Report

The day after our dinosaur workshop last year, this school had an Ofsted inspection.  The overall rating was “Good” for the school and the inspectors highlighted some outstanding teaching, the visit from our dinosaur expert “Dinosaur Mike” to the school the day before the inspection was discussed and the Ofsted inspectors commented that most of the children had made good progress and produced short pieces of good quality hand writing.

Commenting on the benefits of a school visit from a company like Everything Dinosaur, the report states:

“Pupils enjoy writing, especially when it is linked to a visit, or a school visitor.  This was the case in a Year 1 English class where pupils were talking and writing about a recent visit from “Dinosaur Mike”.  Most pupils made good progress and produced short pieces of writing of high quality.  One pupil was able to explain that “Dinosaur Mike is a palaeontologist.”

A themed dinosaur workshop with Year 1 has certainly helped to motivate and inspire the young learners.

Dinosaur Soft Toys – The Amazing Achievosaurs

The Acheivosaurs – Reinforcing Positive Learning Behaviours in EYFS and Year 1

A range of three inch (eight centimetre) tall soft toy dinosaurs is helping young learners to develop life skills.  The Achievosaurs teaching concept is reinforcing positive values in schools and Everything Dinosaur has lobbied hard to get these super dinosaur soft toys back into production.   Many children in the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage) and Year 1 are very familiar with dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex and Diplodocus.  The fascination for all things dinosaur can help motivate young learners and these dinosaur soft toys have proved to be a valuable teaching aid for educationalists.

This range of “Itsy Bitsy” dinosaur soft toys help encourage children.  As these items are now back in production, Everything Dinosaur team members set out to examine how the “Achievosaurs” teaching concept came about.

The Achievosaurs

Retired Bristol school teacher, Lori Mitchell got in touch with Everything Dinosaur and she explained how the idea for using dinosaur soft toys took shape.

Ms Mitchell commented:

“The idea for the Achievosaurs came after a South Gloucestershire Early Years course “Providing Challenge, Improving Outcomes” in October 2010.  During the day, we were asked to consider how we encourage our children to reflect on their learning, rather than just talk about their activities, and how we can help them develop the skills needed to become life-long learners.  We discussed the learning-focused qualities we wanted to encourage in our children and a colleague shared the “Curious Cat” she used with her class.  One of the Early Years advisors then said something like “you know, dinosaurs would be another idea..you could have a Thinkasaurus”…and that was it…I went home after the course and devised the Achievosaurs!”

Dinosaur Themed Lunch Bags and Bottles

The warmer weather (at least some of the time in the UK), leads to an increase in the number of children bringing packed lunches to school.  Everything Dinosaur team members have been asked to advise and recommend something suitable for very young dinosaur fans when it comes to lunch boxes and drinks bottles.  There are many different types of lunch bag and boxes on the market, but we ask parents to consider some practical points when it comes to making a purchase.

Lunch Bag and Matching Drinks Bottle

Here are some points to consider:

  • Make sure the lunch box has plenty of room so that the lunch and a drink can be fitted inside.
  • Can it be cleaned easily, at least able to be wiped over with a sponge?
  • Has it a sturdy zip and is it easy to carry for your child?
  • Has it got some insulation to help keep food fresh and cool?
  • Can it be personalised in some way, we recommend that all lunch bags/lunch boxes have a place for the child’s name?
  • Are drink bottles plastic and leak proof?

Everything Dinosaur recommends the Dinosaurus lunch bag and matching drinks bottle for young dinosaur fans.

Dinosaur Timeline Poster – A Great Educational Resource

Measuring a generous forty-two centimetres by fifty-nine and a half centimetres (42 cm x 59.5 cm), the dinosaur timeline poster provides helpful teaching support when it comes to identifying the length of the geological periods during the time of the dinosaurs and which prehistoric animals lived when.

Dinosaur Timeline Poster

Each geological period, the Triassic, Jurassic and the Cretaceous is beautifully illustrated and each scene depicts typical animals and plants that existed during that part of our planet’s history.  In total, thirty prehistoric animals are picked out on the handy poster key and this poster is a valuable teaching resource when it comes to showing children how the world has changed.

To view the range of educational prehistoric animal themed posters available: Everything Dinosaur – Posters, Toys and Gifts.

Poster Themed Teaching Activities

  1. Block out the key using postage notes that have been cut so that they obscure the information about the length of the geological periods, challenge the class to research independently the age, length and order of the geological time periods.  Compare their answers with the information given out on the poster. Why does the length of the geological periods vary?  Over what time period in millions of years does the poster refer to- A great exercise for exploring the concept of deep time that dovetails into the section of the curriculum involving rocks and fossils.
  2. What similarities and differences can the children see in the animals and plants depicted in each scene?
  3. Can the children identify herbivores, carnivores and omnivores?
  4. What is the significance of the flowering plants/mammals/birds in the dinosaur timeline poster?
  5. Can the children write a story based on what they can see in the prehistoric scenes?

The poster is ideal for a dinosaur museum in a classroom or to be used as part of a classroom display and this dinosaur timeline poster is recommended by Everything Dinosaur and it retails at less than £2.30 plus post and packing!

Meet a Girl Palaeontologist Rag Doll

By |2023-03-25T10:45:55+00:00March 31st, 2015|General Teaching, Key Stage 1/2|Comments Off on Meet a Girl Palaeontologist Rag Doll

Girl Palaeonlogist Rag Doll –  Encouraging Girls into Science

Everything Dinosaur is delighted to support science professionals and their assistants/colleagues who are keen to celebrate the role of women in archaeology, palaeontology and geology.  We at Everything Dinosaur have been lucky enough to met and work with some amazing female scientists and it is great to see a child’s doll on the market that encourages girls to explore the wonderful world of rocks and fossils.  Meet a girl palaeontologist rag doll, a modern-day Mary Anning.

A Palaeontologist Soft Toy is Available from Everything Dinosaur

Girl Palaeontologist Rag Doll

The girl palaeontologist rag doll stands 30 cm high and she is obviously equipped for some series fossil hunting with her sturdy jacket, with plenty of pockets and fossil collectors cap.  This rag doll comes with a theropod dinosaur fossil to find and we are sure that this young lady is going to have some amazing fossil collecting adventures.

To view the girl palaeontologist rag doll and other educational, prehistoric animal themed soft toys: Soft Toy Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Animals.

Everything Dinosaur team members first came across this item several months ago, we have met some of the people behind her production and it is great to see a role model such as this for girls.

When we were puzzling over the name for this new doll, it was pointed out to us, very aptly by an eleven year old girl, that the name “Lottie” can be found in the word:

 PALAEONTOLOGIST.

Perhaps, we call this rag doll “Lottie”, however, the word “Ali” or “Isla” would also be fitting as these names too, can be constructed from the term “palaeontologist”.

The fossil hunter rag doll is recommended by Everything Dinosaur for its creative, imaginative play value and for the way it helps to challenge outmoded stereotypes when it comes to careers.

Getting Feedback from Teachers after a Dinosaur Workshop in School

At Everything Dinosaur we believe in getting feedback from teachers and learning support providers about our dinosaur workshops in school.  To us it is all about developing effective dinosaur and prehistoric animal themed teaching workshops that help educationalists deliver teaching outcomes.

Feedback from Teachers

However, how do we know that our dinosaur workshops are effective?

This is really easy to answer, especially When we get emails like this:

“Thank you so very much for the amazing visit to our school.  The children absolutely loved it and have been inspired to go fossil hunting and some have been to the Natural History Museum with their families.  Everyone is talking about dinosaurs!

Thanks again.”

This was an email received this evening after a school visit undertaken last week to work with EYFS and Key Stage 1 children.

Celebrating International Women’s Day (An Important Global Event)

By |2024-05-04T22:01:30+01:00March 8th, 2015|General Teaching|Comments Off on Celebrating International Women’s Day (An Important Global Event)

March 8th International Women’s Day

Today, the 8th of March is celebrated all over the world as International Women’s Day, a celebration of the role of women in the world and highlighting welfare, social and other issues surrounding women’s rights. Although the origins of this day go back to the early years of the 20th Century,  the fight to give women equality is still extremely relevant today, perhaps even more so.  We at Everything Dinosaur, commemorate this date by recognising the contribution women have made and continue to make to science and to education.

International Women’s Day

Pushing back the boundaries of human understanding in the Earth sciences, today we pay tribute to the pioneering Marie Stopes, the famous suffragette and exponent of birth control.  Dr Stopes (1880-1958) was a highly respected palaeobotanist, who did much to improve our understanding of plant evolution.  She was the first female science lecturer at Manchester University and Everything Dinosaur team members have been privileged to have seen some of the prehistoric plant specimens that Marie herself studied as she strove to understand and date coal measures.

Year 6 Study Life in the Past

By |2023-03-24T17:51:20+00:00March 6th, 2015|General Teaching, Key Stage 1/2|Comments Off on Year 6 Study Life in the Past

Combe Down Year 6 Classes Study Life in the Past

Children in Year 6 (classes 6RH and 6W), have been learning all about life in the past and natural selection.  With the likes of Stonehenge on their doorstep, the school in the pretty village of Combe Down is surrounded by evidence of Stone Age and Bronze Age settlements.  The children have been studying life in the past and making some wonderful charcoal impressions of cave paintings as well as some very realistic prehistoric jewellery.

These studies helped the students as they are now going on to study evolution and natural selection whilst in Upper Key Stage 2.  Both classes in Year 6 will be studying evolution and a visit from Everything Dinosaur provided a perfect provocation to help kick the topic off.  The teaching team too, were grateful for the visit from Everything Dinosaur.

Dinosaur Workshop

The fossil expert was able to provide a foundation for the children’s studies and to point out to them that their school was made from limestone formed during the Jurassic (Bathonian limestone).  Year 6 certainly enjoyed their evolution workshop and Everything Dinosaur promised to send onto the school addition resources linked to extinction and habitat change so that the teachers could undertake some exciting extension activities.

How to Weigh a Stegosaurus

By |2023-03-24T17:19:23+00:00March 4th, 2015|General Teaching|Comments Off on How to Weigh a Stegosaurus

Stegosaurus Weighs 1.6 Tonnes

Scientists at the Natural History Museum (London), have embarked on a research project to learn more about one of the most iconic of the dinosaurs – Stegosaurus.  Back in November 2014, Everything Dinosaur team members reported on the building of a new exhibit at the museum, one that features the most complete fossilised skeleton of a Stegosaurus stenops found to date.  The fossilised remains are more than 80% complete and the skull is exquisitely preserved.  This specimen is going to be the focus of an on-going research project into these armoured dinosaurs, the first of its kind for eighty years.

Weighing a Stegosaurus

Prior to the fossils being mounted in their exhibit pose, every single bone was scanned and digitally recorded.  Using this information, it was possible to calculate the weight of this Late Jurassic herbivore.  The research team have concluded that the Stegosaurus nick-named “Sophie” weighed in at 1.6 metric Tonnes.  That’s heavier than a Ford Focus car,  a Black Rhino (Diceros bicornis) and about as heavy as twenty adult men.  Palaeontologists require information about body mass as it is a key component in calculations related to locomotion and metabolism.

Commenting on the significance of this research, published in the academic journal “Biology Letters”, lead author Dr Charlotte Brassey stated:

“If we want to estimate how fast an animal runs, you need body mass; if you want to say something about their metabolism, you need to know their body mass.  So, yes, we’re really glad that we’ve been able to get hold of this very early on, and now what I’m looking to do is begin to strap muscles on to our computer models so that we can get her walking to say something about locomotion.”
