Happy Birthday Adam Sedgwick Celebrating a Famous Scientist

Geologist Adam Sedgwick Born on this Day 1785

On this day in 1785, Adam Sedgwick was born.  He was to play a vital role in the development of geology and did much to help improve our understanding with regards to the age of the Earth and the various geological periods that can be reflected in the fossil record.  A graduate of Cambridge University, Sedgwick spent much of his working life collaborating with another pioneering British geologist, Roderick Murchison and between them they mapped and dated much of the strata of the British Isles.  Adam Sedgwick was responsible for defining the Cambrian geological period and with Murchison, they defined the Devonian.

Britain’s Developing Canal Network Permitted Access to Rocks

Extensive engineering projects and widespread quarrying as Britain developed its network of canals provided these early pioneers of geology with unprecedented access to the rocks and strata of the British Isles.  This study was further augmented with the development of the railways.  The industrial revolution greatly increased the demand for coal and this fuelled (no pun intended), a tremendous scientific interest in how rock layers are formed and their relative ages.

The Science of Biostratigraphy

Adam Sedgwick played a significant role in the nascent science of biostratigraphy.  Biostratigraphy is the study of the age of strata using the fossils preserved within the rock layers.  Formations, that may be separated by hundreds of miles can be relatively dated using the fossils preserved within the sediments.  Adam Sedgwick was a vehement opponent of Darwin’s theory of evolution.  Although he admired Darwin for his methodical approach to research, he could not accept the consequences of the theory that Darwin postulated in his seminal book of 1859 – that of evolution by natural selection as explained in the “Origin of Species”.

New Dinosaur Described

New Dinosaur Described – Boreonykus certekorum

Canadian palaeontologist Philip Currie in collaboration with Australian Phil Bell has published a scientific paper announcing the discovery of a new meat-eating dinosaur, one that was very probably closely related to the famous Velociraptor.  The fossils of a theropod dinosaur, described by a member of the Everything Dinosaur team as being “about the size of a German Shepherd dog”, come from an extensive dinosaur bonebed containing the remains of a number of huge horned dinosaurs (Pachyrhinosaurus).

Boreonykus certekorum

The shed teeth and isolated bones, including diagnostic cranial material that proved critical in the establishing of a new genus, had been preserved amongst the immense bones of the horned dinosaurs.  These fossils provide evidence that a number of different types of carnivorous dinosaur would have scavenged the carcases of horned dinosaurs, possibly the victims of an attempt to cross a river in flood.

The discovery of a frontal bone (a bone from the front of the skull), led to the erection of a new genus.  The dinosaur has been named Boreonykus certekorum and a phylogenetic analysis indicates that this dinosaur was probably a descendent of Asian members of the Velociraptorinae sub-family of dromaeosaurids.  The researchers propose that the ancestors of B. certekorum migrated across a land bridge from Asia into North America.

Polar Dinosaurs

The fossils come from the Wapiti Formation of north-western Alberta, Canada.  The Pachyrhinosaurus bonebed is located at Pipestone Creek and the fossils have been dated to around 72.5 million years ago or thereabouts.  Writing in the open access, on line journal “The Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology” the scientists suggest that Boreonykus is potentially a close relative of the famous Velociraptor from Asia.

A Polar Climate

During the Late Cretaceous, this part of northern Canada would have been part of an extensive “polar” climate adjacent to an substantial inland sea.  Although not as cold as this region of Canada today, Alberta in the Late Cretaceous would have suffered from long winters with plenty of snow and temperatures below freezing.  It is likely that Boreonykus was covered in a thick coat of shaggy proto-feathers to help keep out the cold.

This small meat-eating dinosaur may not have been a permanent resident of this polar environment, however, it has been noted that relatively small dinosaurs such as Boreonykus would have found migrating long distances quite a challenge.  Indeed, if the bonebed with the Pachyrhinosaurus fossils is anything to go by, there would certainly have been enough carcases in the area to sustain a population of Boreonykus dinosaurs through any long , dark winter.

Dragons and Dinosaurs at Oasis Academy

By |2023-04-13T21:58:16+01:00March 8th, 2016|General Teaching, Key Stage 1/2|Comments Off on Dragons and Dinosaurs at Oasis Academy

Oasis Academy Short Heath (Dinosaurs and Dragons)

Two Year 1 classes at Oasis Academy Short Heath (West Midlands, England) were treated to a dinosaur workshop this week.  The workshops come hot on the heels of a week of studying Chinese dragons.  The whole school seems to have got involved and when the Everything Dinosaur expert arrived and began to set up in the spacious school hall, a lot of the dragons that had been made as part of a homework challenge were on display.  What a colourful collection too!

There were papier mâché dragons, dragons made from egg boxes, cereal packet dragons, sock dragons even some dragons that could be hung from the ceiling like a mobile.  What a clever group of parents and pupils to make such fantastic creatures.

Year 1 Children

Year 1 children will be studying dinosaurs for the rest of the Spring Term, we wonder whether they will be able to make some models of dinosaurs.

Although dragon myths and legends are found in a number of cultures, they are principally associated with China.  Dinosaur fossils have been discovered weathering out of rocks for thousands of years and in the past, fossil bones found in China were taken to be the remains of long dead, winged, monsters – dragons.  “Dragon bones and teeth” were prized possessions thought magical with the ability to cure all manner of ills.  It is very likely that the dragon myth came about as a result of the discovery of dinosaur fossils.

Dinosaur Fossils Probably Inspired the Dragon Myth

dragons and dinosaurs

The dragon myth was very probably inspired by the discovery of dinosaur fossils.

As part of our work with the  Year 1 children we challenged the classes to have a go at designing their very own dinosaur.  We have been promised some pictures, which we are really looking forward to.  If the dragons are anything to go by, we are in for a treat.

Year 1 and Dinosaurs

Mobberley Primary School and Dinosaurs

It was a big day today for the children in Key Stage 1 at Mobberley C.E. Primary!  Not only was the entire school celebrating World Book Day but Year 1 had a special morning of dinosaur themed teaching activities to help kick-start their term topic all about prehistoric animals.  The workshop we delivered was designed to link into the scheme of work that had been put together by the class teacher with the help and support of the teaching assistants.

Dinosaur Workshop

Learning all about dinosaurs and animals that lived in the past provides plenty of opportunities for both fiction and non-fiction writing and the eager, young palaeontologists from Year 1 demonstrated lots of amazing pre-knowledge.  Rufus was able to identify Ankylosaurus and Zack explained how ammonites used gas to help them float around in the sea.  The girls got in on the fun too.  They learned a “super fact” all about T. rex that made their day.

 Year 1 and Dinosaurs

We provided some extension ideas to help support confidence with numbers and challenged Miss Dalton to learn the Mary Anning tongue twister that we emailed across.  There was even a special “dinosaur dig” area in the classroom (thanks for telling us about this fantastic teaching resource Mrs CardenDoorey).  Using paintbrushes, the children could have a go at brushing away the sand to find the dinosaur skeleton.  We wonder what it might be a herbivore, a carnivore or even an omnivore?

Miss Stephenson, (dressed as Mary Poppins for World Book Day), was asked to identify a special object.  It was a good job her class had some super listening skills, so that they could help her with this task.  Even Mary Poppins would have struggled with some of the names of dinosaurs, they can be very long and difficult to say, but not as long or as difficult as “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”!

All too soon, it was time to say goodbye, but our dinosaur expert did set the children some “pinkie palaeontologist challenges” such as could they draw a dinosaur and label its body parts, including the dinosaur’s skull?

Dinosaur Notebook

Ideal for young dinosaur fans, this prehistoric animal themed notebook has illustrations of iconic fossils on the front.  One of the budding young palaeontologists stated that there was “definitely a skull Tyrannosaurus rex” and who are we to argue.  This is a super quality notebook made from recycled materials.  It is great for encouraging writing and great for the environment too.

The front cover (that features the dinosaur skulls), is made from recycled cardboard and the inner pages (80 lined pages), are also made from recycled kraft paper.  At a weight of 80 gsm, the paper is the same weight as most sheets used in schools, so they make an excellent writing medium.  A ballpoint pen is included in the notebook set, it is held securely in place on the inside of the back cover, so there is no chance of this pen getting misplaced.

The pen in our set was black ink and the children had no problems at all writing with it.  The plastic part of the pen is also made from 90% recycled materials, so we can tick the environmentally friendly box with this item, that’s for sure.

Helping to Encourage Writing

The children found the pen easy to grip and the lines on the pages were just about the right spacing to help the children with their note taking, making the writing legible.  One of our younger testers was able to use the notepaper without any problems, carefully ensuring a finger space between each of the words that they had written.  There were lots of lovely examples of writing produced, and it was pleasing to see some excellent punctuation too, not just capital letters and full stops but commas and even one example of quotation mark usage.

Dinosaurs and prehistoric animals as a term topic provides fantastic opportunities to move the children  away from free flowing play activities undertaken in the Foundation Stage to more structured learning.

This provides excellent preparation for the move up to Year 1.  The Reception children had certainly been having a lot of fun, the scheme of work for the term topic had been carefully crafted by the teaching team.

Mind Mapping to Build Teams

By |2023-04-12T09:20:12+01:00January 22nd, 2016|General Teaching|Comments Off on Mind Mapping to Build Teams

Mind Mapping to Support Teachers

The staffroom notice board can get rather congested.  There is so much paperwork and administration these days and with increasing school  populations, coupled with the move towards larger schools in the form of academies, the deluge of paperwork, notices, meeting minutes, union information and so on does not seem likely to abate any time in the future.  However, if space can be found in the staffroom, why not try a mind map?  Mind maps can provide a visual image of the school curriculum, it is simply a very visual way of organising information.

Take for example, this snippet from a mind map spotted by one of our teachers on a recent visit to Sparken Hill Academy in Worksop (Nottinghamshire).

Dinosaurs Feature on a Curriculum Mind Map

To learn more about Everything Dinosaur’s work: Contact Everything Dinosaur.

Mind Maps

If space can be found somewhere on the staffroom walls, then a mind map can be created.  Simply, paint a large area with black paint and provide chalk so that a mind map can be drawn.  Brainstorming sessions amongst staff members can help teaching teams make connections and explore potential resources to help support their teaching aims.  For Sparken Hill Academy, the teaching team linked a visit from Everything Dinosaur to deliver a dinosaur workshop in support of Key Stage 1 to the menu being served at the school canteen.  The children had been learning all about herbivores and carnivores (some omnivores too), so the cafe was used to help the reinforce learning about food chains and food webs.

Teachers in Year 3, who were covering how fossils form as part of the science element of the new national curriculum dealing with rocks and fossils could utilise the many photographs taken of the fossils used in the Everything Dinosaur workshops.  The Year 1 and Year 2 teachers could even request further information and photographs to help their colleagues in Key Stage 2 with their scheme of work.

Dinosaur Workshops in School

Mind maps can be a very powerful way of helping to visualise the curriculum and to make connections which enhances the learning of all the children in the school.  A mind map in the staffroom can be a useful resource for teachers and teaching assistants to help them visualise links in the national curriculum.  It can aid the senior leadership team in their quest to optimise resources and monitor budgets and mind maps can help to foster a spirit of greater co-operation.  Building an effective mind map can involve the whole school and this can help to build teams.

Biggest Dinosaur Needs a Name and a Television Programme Tells the Remarkable Story

By |2024-05-05T18:28:02+01:00January 13th, 2016|General Teaching|Comments Off on Biggest Dinosaur Needs a Name and a Television Programme Tells the Remarkable Story

Giant Dinosaur from Argentina Appears on Television

The huge fossilised bones of the biggest dinosaur discovered so far are to feature in a BBC television programme which is being shown on BBC1 on Sunday, 24th January.  The fossils of a enormous, long-necked dinosaur known as a titanosaur (tie-tan-oh-sore) were found in Argentina (South America).  One of the leg bones (the thigh bone) is so large that it cannot fit through a classroom door.

One of the Massive Bones of the Dinosaur

That is a very big thigh bone!

The photograph above shows television presenter Sir David Attenborough standing next to the leg bone of this newly discovered, plant-eating dinosaur.  In the BBC television programme that is being broadcast at 6.30pm on Sunday 24th January, Sir David explains how the fossils were found and what they can tell us about a dinosaur that was probably 10% bigger than the mighty Argentinosaurus, the current holder of the title of being the biggest dinosaur known to science.

Huge Dinosaur Does Not Have a Name Yet

Palaeontologists have been busy studying all the dinosaur bones (220 of them in total) and working out what the animal might have looked like when it was alive.  Trouble is, this dinosaur has not been given a name yet.  Can you suggest a name for this huge dinosaur?

  • Perhaps we could call it “Enor-mo-saur-rus?
  • How about Gi-gan-toe-don?
  • Or even Bigg-er-saur-us?

Can  you think of some lovely describing words and then use them to come up with your very own dinosaur name?
