Sending Out Mojo Fun Lucky Charms
Mojo Fun has produced a limited edition run of golden lucky rat key rings, to celebrate the Chinese year of the rat. In the Chinese zodiac, the rat is the first animal in the cycle of animals and the year of the rat represents a time for fresh starts and new beginnings. People born in the year of a rat are thought to be hard-working and industrious.
In Chinese astrology, those born in the year of the rat are diligent with a positive outlook on life. They also like to collect things and involve themselves with many interests and hobbies. Such a hobby might be prehistoric animal model collecting. Everything Dinosaur certainly has lots of customers in the Far East.

Turntable Tuesday – CollectA Deluxe Microraptor Dinosaur Model
It’s “Turntable Tuesday” and it is time to put another prehistoric animal model on the Everything Dinosaur turntable and give it a spin. Today, we feature the awesome, new for 2020 CollectA Deluxe 1:6 scale Microraptor dinosaur model.

The CollectA Deluxe Microraptor is in stock at Everything Dinosaur, this fantastic, feathered dinosaur figure and the rest of the CollectA Deluxe Prehistoric Life collection can be found here: CollectA Deluxe Prehistoric Life Models.
The CollectA Deluxe Microraptor Dinosaur Model
First named and scientifically described twenty years ago, Microraptor has become one of the most studied of all the Chinese dinosaurs from Liaoning Province. It was the first dinosaur specimen found to demonstrate the presence of flight feathers on its hind legs as well as on its arms. Three species have been assigned to this genus, although there is some debate as to their validity as separate species. Microraptor fossils are the most abundant non-avialan dinosaur found in the Jiufotang Formation (Liaoning Province).
All the material comes from the same bedding plane – the Shangheshou Bed. It has been estimated that over three hundred specimens have been collected to date, although it is difficult to verify this figure as a large number of specimens are in the hands of private collectors who are reluctant to come forward due to the difficulties that might arise once these fossils come to the attention of the Chinese authorities.

Iridescent Feathers and a Bifurcated Tail
In 2012, a scientific paper was published in “Science”, the journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, that reported upon a study of fossilised pigment cells (melanosomes), preserved within a Microraptor fossil specimen (BMNHC PH881). The researchers compared the arrangements of the melanosomes to those of extant birds and concluded that although Microraptor feathers were black, the melanosomes were reminiscent of the melanosomes found in birds that have iridescent feathers.
The scientific paper that proposes iridescence in the plumage of Microraptor “Reconstruction of Microraptor and the Evolution of Iridescent Plumage” by Quanguo Li, Ke-Qin Gao, Qingjin Meng, Julia A. Clarke, Matthew D. Shawkey, Liliana D’Alba, Rui Pei, Mick Ellison, Mark A. Norell and Jakob Vinther published in the journal Science.
In Everything Dinosaur’s short “Turntable Tuesday” video, these iridescent feathers on the CollectA Microraptor are highlighted. In addition, the model also sports a bifurcated tailfan, as reflected in fossil discoveries. It has been suggested that this tailfan structure and the iridescent feathers were primarily used for display.
CollectA Deluxe Fukuisaurus 1:40 Scale Dinosaur Model Reviewed
Team members at Everything Dinosaur have been busy preparing a bespoke video studio so that they can provide more in-depth video reviews for customers and fans of dinosaur model collecting. The first full-length review of a dinosaur model has been published on the company’s YouTube channel. The dinosaur model reviewed is the beautiful, new for 2020 CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale Fukuisaurus.
Everything Dinosaur’s Video Review of the New for 2020 CollectA Deluxe 1:40 Scale Fukuisaurus Dinosaur Model
In our short video we try to combine a little bit of the science behind the study of this Japanese dinosaur with comments about the CollectA Deluxe replica. For example, we discuss the model and its quadrupedal stance but in reality this herbivorous dinosaur probably spent the majority of its time in a bipedal posture (the forelimbs were much shorter than the hindlimbs). In addition, we comment on the beautifully painted mouth and beak of Fukuisaurus. The video then provides information about the unusual anatomical features associated with the skull of Fukuisaurus.

A 1/40th Scale Model?
The video also provides the opportunity for the Fukuisaurus to be measured. Viewers can see that the figure measures approximately 14 centimetres long. CollectA have included this model in their CollectA Deluxe range and it is described as being in 1:40 scale. However, team members at Everything Dinosaur advise collectors to take a more relaxed approach to stated scales when it comes to prehistoric animal models, especially dinosaurs. Most dinosaurs are known from relatively scrappy and incomplete skeletons, therefore, it is often very difficult to provide accurate information about the size and weight of the animal.
In the Everything Dinosaur Fukuisaurus fact sheet that accompanies sales of this model, we state that Fukuisaurus (F. tetoriensis), was approximately 4 to 4.5 metres in length. Based on these dimensions, we estimate that the model is in approximately 1:30 or 1:32 scale.

Our video review permits us to explain a little more about the size and scale of this dinosaur model.
Fossils Found in Close Association with Fukuiraptor (F. kitadaniensis)
The bedding plane from where the fossils of Fukuisaurus were found (the lower portion of Bonebed I at the famous Kitadani Quarry on Honshu Island, Japan), also contain the fossilised remains of a theropod dinosaur. This dinosaur is the similar-sized Fukuiraptor, which was actually formally described some three years before Fukuisaurus. The phylogeny of Fukuiraptor remains open to debate, although numerous vertebrate palaeontologists support the idea that Fukuiraptor was a member of the enigmatic Megaraptora clade.
Fukuiraptor may have hunted Fukuisaurus. In the Everything Dinosaur video review, the narrator comments upon this possibility and discusses the lack of evidence to support this notion.
Sharing the Same Bonebed and Now Sharing the Same Video

The dinosaur model video review also provides the opportunity to discuss some of the unique anatomical traits associated with Fukuisaurus. Ornithopod skulls were remarkable examples of natural selection. These dinosaurs evolved the ability to chew their food. In order to process the tough stems of cycads, pine needles and horsetails, these dinosaurs evolved pleurokinetic skulls. To process food in their mouths, the lower jaw moved up and against the inner surface of the teeth in the upper jaw, to produce a scissor-like cutting action. To achieve this, the top part of the skull had to accommodate the movement of the lower jaw. The skull could flex slightly in several places allowing the skull to be hinged (pleurokinetic joints).
In our video review, we discuss this and point out that the maxilla (part of the upper jaw), was closely associated with a facial bone in the skull. This suggests that the skull of Fukuisaurus either could not flex, or that it was hinged in a different way to the skulls of related ornithopods.
Our YouTube Channel
The Everything Dinosaur YouTube channel is jam-packed with lots of prehistoric animal model reviews and information, we also post up lots of hints and tips about dinosaur model collecting along with reading recommendations, new book reviews and we have introduced “turntable Tuesday”, our once-a-week short video review of a prehistoric animal figure.

Six of the Best!
CollectA intend to introduce a total of eighteen prehistoric animal figures in 2020. Due to coronavirus production plans have been interrupted, but Everything Dinosaur has been able to receive stocks of the first six models to be released. These six new dinosaur figures help to demonstrate the great variety of body plans within the Dinosauria. As for the models, we could say that they represent “six of the best”.

CollectA Deluxe Scale Figures
Four of the newly arrived CollectA dinosaur models are scale figures. As well as the 1:40 scale Fukuisaurus (pictured earlier), there is a 1:40 scale replica of the recently described (2019), sauropod Bajadasaurus (B. pronuspinax).

Everything Dinosaur on YouTube
The YouTube channel of Everything Dinosaur features lots of videos of dinosaurs and other prehistoric animal figures. Our aim is to provide model reviews, hints and tips for collectors and to develop videos that provide a useful resource for our customers and for dinosaur fans of all ages.
The CollectA Deluxe 1:40 Scale Bajadasaurus (B. pronuspinax)
Bajadasaurus was only formally named and scientifically described in February 2019 (although the fossils were found back in 2010), we congratulate the design team at CollectA for being so quick off the mark when it comes to bringing out a figure representing a dinosaur that was described a little over a year ago. It has been assigned to the Dicraeosauridae family of long-necked dinosaurs, although, these dinosaurs are characterised by their relatively short necks when compared to the related diplodocids such as Apatosaurus, Brontosaurus and Diplodocus.

If the fossil material has been interpreted correctly, then Bajadasaurus was one of the most bizarre of all the Dinosauria known to science. The model, and indeed the scientific illustrations of this prehistoric animal have been based on better-known dicraeosaurids. The huge neural spines, associated with the cervical vertebra assigned to position C5 in the neck of this dinosaur, gave rise to the idea that each neck bone had a pair of enormous, keratin-coated spines which would have acted as a formidable deterrent for any meat-eating dinosaur looking for a meal.

As Everything Dinosaur team members get better acquainted with the video management software and other technical aspects of the company’s small studio, we have opted to try and produce at least one dinosaur or prehistoric animal themed YouTube video a week. With the arrival of a small turntable, we decided to start showcasing various dinosaur figures by producing short (around one or two minutes long), videos. In this brief YouTube video, we highlight the new for 2020 CollectA Deluxe 1:40 scale Fukuisaurus dinosaur model.

Fukuisaurus – A Japanese Dinosaur
The CollectA Fukuisaurus model follows hot on the heels of the CollectA Fukuiraptor figure that was introduced in 2019. Both dinosaurs are associated with the famous Kitadani Formation of Fukui on the Japanese island of Honshu. The ornithopod Fukuisaurus (which was named and described in 2003) and the theropod Fukuiraptor, which was formally scientifically described three years earlier, come from the same bonebed in the Kitadani Dinosaur Quarry (Bonebed I). It has been speculated that Fukuiraptor preyed upon Fukuisaurus, but there is very little scientific evidence other than the proximity of the fossil material to support this supposition.
Two Models of Dinosaurs from the Lower Cretaceous of Japan

Towards the end of this short video (it lasts a fraction over two minutes long), the CollectA Deluxe Fukuisaurus and the CollectA Fukuiraptor are shown together. This permits dinosaur model fans and collectors to get a really good look at both figures. Although the Fukuisaurus is part of the CollectA Deluxe range and it is in approximately 1:40 scale, as Fukuisaurus was a relatively small member of the hadrosaurid lineage, the actual dinosaur model is quite small. Everything Dinosaur team members have measured the replica and it is approximately 14 cm long and stands around 5.5 cm high at the hips.
It is beautifully detailed and there is much to be admired in this CollectA figure (yes, we do point out in the video that this dinosaur model does have a cloaca).
A spokesperson for Everything Dinosaur commented:
“A lot of dinosaur model fans and collectors have asked us to make more videos about prehistoric animals, we are working hard to get up to speed and we do intend to produce another forty or so videos this year, including reviews of some of the new for 2020 CollectA models.”

With the arrival of the first model in the new Wild Past prehistoric animal range, a 1:35 scale replica of Protoceratops andrewsi, Everything Dinosaur team members celebrated by creating a short video featuring this Protoceratops dinosaur model.

Wild Past Protoceratops Dinosaur Model (P. andrewsi)
The video lasts just under 90 seconds, but the use of the turntable enables dinosaur model fans to get a really good look at this exciting new figure.
The Protoceratops is the first figure to be introduced in this range and the dinosaur replica comes complete with a little model of a nest of dinosaur eggs. The addition of the dinosaur eggs is very appropriate, as the discovery of nests of eggs in association with the fossilised remains of Protoceratops andrewsi demonstrated that at least some of the members of the Dinosauria laid eggs. The Protoceratops dinosaur model measures around 6.5 cm in length and the tip of that bristle tail is approximately 3 cm high.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:
“The turntable we used in this short video, enables viewers to get a really good look at the figure. We hope to make more videos like this and to post them up regularly. In the meantime, dinosaur model fans should note that this Wild Past figure has had a limited production run, only 500 models have been made.”

The dinosaur model comes complete with its own box, the beautiful box art was provided by renowned Joseph Fells. The artist gets a brief mention in our Wild Past Protoceratops video. There are plans to add more prehistoric animal figures to the Wild Past range and Everything Dinosaur will be able to publish news of forthcoming models in the near future.
The Wild Past Protoceratops andrewsi (1:35) is in Stock

Protoceratops andrewsi
Protoceratops andrewsi is one of two species assigned to the Protoceratops genus. It was formally named and scientifically described nearly a hundred years ago (1923). A second, slightly larger species was described in 2001 (Protoceratops hellenikorhinus). It remains one of the most intensely studied of all the Dinosauria and it’s discovery (the first fossil specimen was found in 1922), has helped palaeontologists to better understand two crucial aspects of dinosaur biology.
Firstly, dinosaur nests and eggs were found in association with the ubiquitous fossil remains. This was the conclusive proof that scientists had been searching for that demonstrated that at least some of the Dinosauria laid eggs. In addition, the hundreds of fossil specimens, many with cranial material, has enabled palaeontologists to piece together how these animals changed as they got older and matured. As a result, the ontogeny of this dinosaur is quite well understood (ontogenesis – how an organism develops anatomically as it grows).
Palaeontologists have examples of embryos, recently hatched individuals, juveniles as well as fully mature adults to study.

Commenting on the addition of the Wild Past Protoceratops model to Everything Dinosaur’s portfolio of prehistoric animal figures and replicas, a spokesperson for the UK-based company stated:
“We are delighted to be able to add the Wild Past range to our ever-going stock of dinosaur and prehistoric animal figures. We have already received a number of enquiries about this new replica, many collectors have been concerned that they might not be able to get hold of the Protoceratops, especially as the first production run has been quite small. Now dinosaur fans and model collectors can acquire this 1:35 scale dinosaur model from Everything Dinosaur.”

New for 2020 Mojo Fun Prehistoric Animal Models Delayed Until at Least June 2020
The impact of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) and the disruption to the Chinese economy is beginning to affect production plans and proposed delivery schedules for new for 2020 prehistoric animal models. In Everything Dinosaur’s statement released earlier this week, we explained that this virus outbreak has global implications that will affect producers, retailers and importers across a vast spectrum of goods, not only goods sourced from Asia. Our statement also conveyed our thoughts and sympathies to all those people affected by COVID-19. Our full statement of earlier this week can be found here: Everything Dinosaur COVID-19 Information.
New Mojo Fun Prehistoric Animal Models Delayed
As part of our own plans to help mitigate the impact of the virus, we have been working closely with our distribution chain partners and we can now confirm that the eagerly awaited new for 2020 Mojo Fun prehistoric animal models are likely to be delayed until at least June 2020. Further delays cannot be ruled out at this stage.

Mojo Fun Prehistoric Animal Models
There are plans to introduce more than ten new dinosaur models along with colour variants of existing models. However, the outbreak of COVID-19 has curtailed the original plans to have these figures available in March 2020. The latest information received by Everything Dinosaur suggests that the new for 2020 prehistoric animals are likely to be delayed until at least June 2020. The new Tyrannosaurus rex Deluxe model with an articulated jaw (seen on the right of the picture above), is one of the new figures affected.
“Bully” for Mojo Fun Brontosaurus But Not Until June 2020

The Mojo Fun Brontosaurus Deluxe model, regarded as an impressive sauropod replica by those lucky enough to have had the chance to view the prototype and pre-production samples, is also affected. This twenty-three centimetre long Brontosaurus had been expected in early March but it is not likely to be available now until the early summer.
Everything Dinosaur Comments
A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented:
“We are grateful to Mojo Fun for their swift action. By informing Everything Dinosaur we can build in contingency plans to help to bring in new models from this range as quickly as possible. This is a fast moving story, we will do all we can to keep our customers informed about new model availability. Fortunately, we have managed to build up buffer stocks of the popular Mojo Fun prehistoric and extinct model range and we should be able to support sales of existing models for some time to come.”
