The CollectA Deluxe Diprotodon Model

The CollectA Diprotodon figure measures over twenty centimetres in length.  It has a shoulder height of approximately twelve centimetres.  CollectA have declared a scale of 1:20 for this model.  Mike from Everything Dinosaur narrates the video review.  He highlights the skull and discusses the dentition of the model.  The fresh wound on the cheek is contrasted with the old scar located on the rump. One is the result of a recent bout of intraspecific competition, whilst the other is a scar from an attack from a Thylacoleo.

New CollectA Deluxe Polacanthus Model Video Review

Everything Dinosaur team members have completed their review of the new for 2024 CollectA Deluxe Polacanthus model.  Their video review is now live on the Everything Dinosaur YouTube channel.  The video is approximately twenty minutes in length.  It provides a comprehensive overview of the new CollectA figure and highlights the extraordinary details seen on this new armoured dinosaur model.

Video credit: Everything Dinosaur

A Review of the CollectA Deluxe Polacanthus

The YouTube video review explores how our perceptions regarding this armoured dinosaur have changed.  Named in 1865, this dinosaur was further described in 1887 (John Whitaker Hulke).  The Hungarian polymath Franz Nopcsa was tasked with creating a museum exhibit of this dinosaur in 1905.  He had little fossil material to work with and it has been speculated that Nopcsa based his reconstruction on Stegosaurus.  This taxon had been described earlier from much more complete fossil material.

Studying Polacanthus and the connection with Stegosaurus.

Nopcsa’s 1905 reconstruction of Polacanthus foxii seems to have been heavily influenced by the Stegosaurus taxon.  Picture credit: Everything Dinosaur.

The influence of Stegosaurus on Polacanthus foxii is discussed in the video review.  This might explain why a lot of early reconstructions of Polacanthus show it with the narrow skull of a typical stegosaur.  The comparison with Stegosaurus may have led to the interpretation of the dermal armour, it being placed on the back of the animal in two, parallel rows.

New CollectA Polacanthus YouTube Video Nears Completion

By |2024-04-12T15:41:00+01:00April 12th, 2024|Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur videos, Main Page, Photos/Pictures of Fossils, Press Releases|0 Comments

The new CollectA Polacanthus YouTube video is nearly complete. This video review will examine how accurately the model reflects the known fossil material.  A review of armoured dinosaur fossil specimens associated with the Wealden Group is continuing.  Isolated dermal armour fossils from southern England and the Isle of Wight may not necessarily represent the Polacanthus taxon.  With the arrival of a new CollectA Polacanthus figure this year, team members have taken the opportunity to create a short YouTube video outlining the changing perceptions regarding Polacanthus foxii.

How accurate is the new CollectA Polacanthus?

Reviewing the CollectA Polacanthus

Everything Dinosaur were fortunate to be sent an early prototype of the figure.  This figure has been used in our video review.  It is a 3D print, and it has been painted in accordance with the production figure’s approved colour scheme.  However, it is approximately the same size as the production model, albeit the model has two drainage holes located on its underside.

A spokesperson explained that as the material representing members of the Thyreophora was being reviewed, so it was likely that more taxa of British armoured dinosaurs would be erected.  The spokesperson outlined that the Thyreophora was a clade.  It consists of ornithischian armoured dinosaurs.  To date, three armoured dinosaur taxa are associated with the Wealden Group, these dinosaurs are:

  • Hylaeosaurus (H. armatus) named by Mantell in 1833.
  • Polacanthus (P. foxii) named in 1865.
  • Vectipelta (V. barretti) named in 2023.

Completing the CollectA Deluxe Polacanthus Video

The video consists of several pieces of narration including a short segment that explains the history of Polacanthus research.  In addition, the video highlights some of the confusing perceptions that arose following the first scientific reconstruction of Polacanthus in 1905 (Nopcsa).  Fortunately, the review of the figure has been concluded.  This section has proved to be the most difficult part of the video to create.  The work entailed undertaking an examination of the CollectA model and comparing it to the holotype fossil material.

The CollectA Polacanthus YouTube video review should be live on Everything Dinosaur’s YouTube site in a few days.

Scientific Papers and Published Research

Spinosaurus aegyptiacus has been the subject of increased scrutiny over the last decade or so.  The debate regarding the lifestyle and the behaviour of this carnivorous dinosaur has been intense.  Palaeontologists are divided as to whether Spinosaurus was an aquatic animal, mainly terrestrial or perhaps semiaquatic.  It possesses several characteristics that suggest adaptations for life in the water.  However, whether this animal could dive and remain submerged remains controversial.  Indeed, papers have been published which conclude that Spinosaurus would have been unstable in water.  Its unusual body shape and huge dorsal fin could impede this animal’s ability to stay upright when it was swimming.

The Everything Dinosaur Aymen the Spinosaurus YouTube video summarises some of the scientific papers.  It is likely that the Spinosaurus lifestyle debate will continue indefinitely.  The absence of articulated fossil specimens hampers research.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur commented that the video will show the new Spinosaurus figure.  The video would also provide a summary of the research over the last ten years.

The spokesperson added:

The New CollectA Polacanthus and the Sacral Shield

By |2024-03-25T14:02:18+00:00March 19th, 2024|Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur News and Updates, Everything Dinosaur Products, Everything Dinosaur videos, Main Page, Photos of Everything Dinosaur Products|0 Comments

The CollectA Polacanthus model will be in stock at Everything Dinosaur soon. Only one species is currently assigned to this genus (P. foxii). In the past, several species were erected. However, a formal review of armoured dinosaur fossils associated with the Wealden Group (Raven et al 2020) clarified the placement of ankylosaurian fossil material. Much of the fossil material has now been assigned to other taxa or declared too indistinct to be confidently assigned at the genus level.

The 2024 CollectA Polacanthus Model

The new for 2024 CollectA Polacanthus figure reflects the recent review of the British Wealden Group ankylosaurs. It represents the very latest scientific interpretation of this iconic dinosaur which was named in 1865.

The Polacanthus Sacral Shield

This dinosaur is famous for its shield of armour located over the hips. This is referred to as the sacral shield or sometimes the pelvic shield. In the holotype the sacral shield measures 108 cm in length. It is approximately 90 cm wide. Most descriptions of the raised bosses and dermal armour associated with the sacral shield refer to four rows of osteoderms on each side of this pelvic shield. These features do not seem to be present in the holotype fossil material.

The sacral shield on the new CollectA Polacanthus does reflect quite accurately the holotype material. For example, the largest bosses associated with the sacral shield of Polacanthus foxii are located in the corners at the distal end of the shield. These large bosses have been reproduced in the new CollectA figure.

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur explained:

“The sacral shield on the CollectA Polacanthus model does reflect the morphology of the holotype. The bosses and osteoderms present on the sacral shield of the model follow the layout as depicted in the 19th century lithographs. In addition, we think that CollectA were given access to additional images of the actual fossils. This helped the design team to recreate the model with a high degree of accuracy.”

The CollectA Polacanthus model in 1:20 scale is due to arrive at Everything Dinosaur later this year.

Recommending a Favourite Dinosaur Book for Dinosaur Fans

By |2024-03-09T15:01:01+00:00January 7th, 2024|Book Reviews, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur videos, Famous Figures, Main Page, Palaeontological articles|0 Comments

Whilst preparing a YouTube video on the new for 2024 CollectA Deluxe Polacanthus model, we frequently consulted one of our favourite dinosaur books. “Dinosaurs of the British Isles” by Dr Dean Lomax and Nobumichi Tamura first went into print about ten years ago. It is a comprehensive overview of dinosaurs from Britain. Around a hundred different genera are discussed.

We like this informative book so much that we made a YouTube short about it.

The book contains a foreword by the renowned British palaeontologist Professor Paul Barrett. It then outlines the early history of palaeontology in the UK highlighting the contributions of Mary Anning, the Reverend William Buckland and Richard Owen. Chapters are dedicated to different geological periods during the Mesozoic and the reader is taken from the Early Triassic to end of the age of dinosaurs.

“Dinosaurs of the British Isles”

A spokesperson from Everything Dinosaur explained that they were preparing a video on the CollectA Deluxe Polacanthus figure, and the book provided helpful information. “Dinosaurs of the British Isles” provides a unique account of dinosaur discoveries from the UK. The text and photographs of the fossils associated with Polacanthus foxii proved to be extremely helpful when devising the video script.

The new for 2024 CollectA Deluxe 1:20 scale Polacanthus is a remarkable dinosaur model. It challenges perceptions concerning this armoured dinosaur. The model is devoid of pre sacral spines and there are spines on the upper arm of the model. Everything Dinosaur team members set out to understand the science behind this prehistoric animal figure.

A New Nanotyrannus Video

By |2024-01-07T16:48:26+00:00January 5th, 2024|Adobe CS5, Dinosaur Fans, Everything Dinosaur Products, Everything Dinosaur videos, Main Page, Press Releases|0 Comments

A new scientific paper published this week postulated that Nanotyrannus (N. lancensis) is a valid taxon. The study was published in the journal “Fossil Studies”. Several lines of scientific enquiry were explored, and the researchers concluded the fossil material ascribed to Nanotyrannus probably did not represent examples of juvenile T. rex.

One of the authors of the study is Dr Nicholas Longrich of the University of Bath. The other author is fellow palaeontologist Dr Evan Saitta, a PhD graduate of the University of Bristol and a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Chicago.

Everything Dinosaur team members created a short video to highlight this research.

Is Nanotyrannus (N. lancensis) a valid taxon? A new scientific study suggests that it is. Video credit: Everything Dinosaur.

Nanotyrannus Models

The debate surrounding the validity of Nanotyrannus is likely to continue. Indeed, this taxon has attracted controversy ever since it was first formally erected in 1946 (Gilmore). However, model manufacturers have produced Nanotyrannus figures. For example, in 2021 PNSO introduced “Logan the Nanotyrannus” and Safari Ltd have made a Dino Dana Nanotyrannus (see below).

Dino Dana Nanotyrannus dinosaur model.

Dinosaur fans and model collectors can discuss the validity of this taxon and perhaps these tyrannosaurs can do battle with other tyrannosaur figures animals such as Tarbosaurus and of course Tyrannosaurus rex.

T. rex Ontogeny

More than twenty Tyrannosaurus rex specimens have been described. Palaeontologists are aware that this dinosaur changed its body plan dramatically as it grew and matured. A juvenile T. rex had a proportionately much smaller head, a slender neck and longer legs than the adults. This change in body shape is so dramatic that in all likelihood, juveniles behaved very differently than mature animals. They also probably hunted in different ways.

It is as if adult and juvenile T. rex were different species. If this is the case, then juveniles occupied a very different niche in the ecosystem compared to the fully-grown tyrannosaurs. This helps to explain the confusion over the taxonomy of all the tyrannosaur specimens currently assigned to Nanotyrannus lancensis/Tyrannosaurus rex.

The scientific paper: “Taxonomic Status of Nanotyrannus lancensis (Dinosauria: Tyrannosauroidea) — A Distinct Taxon of Small-Bodied Tyrannosaur” by Nicholas R. Longrich and Evan T. Saitta published in Fossil Studies.
